ACADEMIES AND INSTITUTIONS IN THE PROMOTION OF ART AND CULTURE (SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI)

SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI

Inaugurated in 1953, it functions through a General council, an executive Board, A finance committee and other standing or ado committee. Which the General council or th Executive Board may appoint. The main objective of the Akademi is to foster and develop Indian dance, drama (including films) an music and to promote through them the cultural unity of the country. The main task of the Akademi for the present is to conduct survey and research in the existing art –forms found in various parts
So  the country. To record and film them as a part of our cultural heritage, to  publish or to encourage publication of material bout them to develop and popularize these arts by organizing and sponsoring seminars and festivals and by establishing institutions, and to give awards to famous artists for music, fork and classical dance, drama and films.

To achieve its objective and executive its programmed the akademi has been organizing national music festival since 1954, National dance Fl of all classical and traditional dances and modern ballets, has been giving financial National Awards to eminent vocalists and instrumentalists of n\both North Indian and Caryatid music as well as classical deciders every year. It has been awarding Running trophy every year to the best troop participating in the annual folk Dance festival held in Delhi on the occasion of Republic Day annual for Dance Festival held in Delhi on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations. It is trying trod build up a library of Indian music and has set up a committee to compel a dictionary of technical terms in Indian music, dance and drama. Efforts are being made to encourage, popularize and develop community singing in the country. Tile various state governments have established regional academies to record and collect folk music and dance of their respective areas.


As regards Drama, the akademi has requested the various state governments to set up their local cultural centres where artists can perform and people can participate in their own dramas, music, dance, etc. The akademi is trying to build up a national Theatre in Delhi, and is presenting national Awards to those recorders every year and giving financial assistance to deserving organizations and institutions. It has been organizing programmers of dance and music for the various visiting cultural delegations of foreign countries.

It view of the many theatrical, musical and dance forms prevalent in the country, the akademi has set up a special unit for surveying and documenting them. Its is and tape library has the largest collection of Indian classical, folk and tribal ,music and dance and theatre items.

The akademi is running two national institutions for imparting training in dance. These are the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy, Lapthal. The akademi has also been helping in the resurgence of the puppet theatre in the country.

The akademi operates a scheme under which subsidy is given for publication of books in various Indian languages and in English on music, dance and drama. It honors outstanding performing artists by making them fellows and confers annual awards.

The akademi has gallery of musical instruments. Safari, where a large number of classical, folk and trial musical instruments are on display. Yavnaika, another gallery, houses a representative collection of fascinating masks, puppets an folk theatre costumes.

The akademi gives considerable importance to documentation of various forms of traditional, folk and tribal performing arts. For the purpose, it has a unit which documents the arts in the shape of films, photographs and recording on sound and video tapes. This documented material is kept in the archives of the akademi and is a available to research scholars.


The akademi also operates plan schemes for preservation and promotion of regional arts and dances and many forms of tribal performing arts by organizing festivals in areas where there is concentration of tribal population.
